Miss Clare Callahan

Miss Clare Callahan is an energetic and passionate early-career music educator. She graduated from Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) in the spring of 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education, concentrating in choral and vocal performance.

During her time at WCSU, Miss Callahan was an active member of several premier choral ensembles, including the Chamber Singers, University Choir, and Concert Chorale. She frequently served as alto section leader and performed as a Mezzo-Soprano soloist, while singing alto in ensemble settings. In addition to her vocal studies, she performed flute with the Symphonic Band, an instrument she has played since eighth grade.

Miss Callahan also demonstrated exceptional leadership during her undergraduate years. She served as President of the WCSU chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) from 2019–2020, expanding the group’s membership from just five students to more than sixty in under a year. In recognition of her contributions to the university’s choral tradition, she received the Don Craig & James Furman Choral Legacy Award (2020)—becoming the first female recipient since the award’s inception in the 1990s.

Outside of music, she was a member of the WCSU NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Team, competing in both singles and doubles, and served as Secretary of the WCSU chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in 2016. Beyond campus, she devoted over ten years to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life as a Luminaria Chairperson and continues to volunteer with Dream Come True of Western Connecticut, helping grant wishes to terminally ill children.

In her free time, Miss Callahan enjoys singing with community choirs throughout Western Connecticut, Irish dancing, and attending professional development events to further enhance her teaching practice.

Her teaching career began with student teaching in her hometown of New Fairfield, where she worked with middle and high school choirs. Although the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted her elementary placement, she soon began her professional journey, teaching choir, group vocal lessons, and group piano at Warde High School, Ludlowe High School, and Tomlinson Middle School in Fairfield, CT. She later became Choral Director and Music History teacher at Seymour Middle School.

In 2021, Miss Callahan was honored with the Connecticut ACDA Outstanding Young Choral Director Award, a distinction recognizing excellence among emerging choral educators across the state.

Currently, Miss Callahan serves as the Choral and Theater Director at Bunnell High School, where she began teaching in the 2022 school year. Her first theatrical production, A Christmas Carol, marked an exciting start to her work with the school’s performing arts community. She looks forward to growing the choral program to over 80 students and revitalizing the theater program to encourage wide participation and produce outstanding performances.

In the coming years, Miss Callahan plans to pursue her Master’s degree in Choral Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College as she continues to inspire young musicians and build strong, inclusive performing arts programs.
